چکیده

In 1993 trees and shrubs were planted along a study area of Leatherstocking Creek (otsego C01mty, N. Y.) previously devoid of riparian vegetation. A baseline study was initiated to deteo~ne the effects of il~roved riparian vegetation ou waler quality, invertebrate and fish composition and biomass. INTRODUCTION Significant mortality of brook trout occurred in the upper reaches of Leather-stocking creek during the sumners of 1988 and 1991. Preliminary investigations by Hayes (1989, and 1990) and others (Foster et aI, 1991) indicated that high water temperature due to the absence of riparian vegetation was the likely cause. To test this hypothesis a field study was initial~J along Leatherstocking creek on the property of Louis Hager. Prior to 1993, the upper section of Leatherstocking creek was lacking sufficient riparian cover to l'raintain cool water temperatures for supporting trout. In 1993 stream corridor improvements wen~ unded.aken to increase the quantity and diversity of riparian vegetation (Figure 1). This study was the first year of a 5-year monitoring program to dOClznenl the impact of improved riparian vegetation on stream ecology. The impa<.~t of stream improve:nents on the biotic and abiotic environrnent were determined by s~~ling water quality, fish and invertebrate populations. MATERIALS AND METHOD On 24 .June and 28 July 1993 water quality w..:'asurements were taken at five sample sites utilized in the "Baseline Study of Leatherstocking Creek at Louis Hager I s Property" (Stanton 1992). Effects of prescribed fire on a Sierra Nevada (California, USA) stream and its riparian zone

Concerns about the effects of fire on ecologically sensitive habitats have limited the use of prescribed fire in the management of forest riparian areas. Using a beyond-BACI (Before-After-Control-Impact) experimental design, we examined the effects of a 26-ha prescribed fire that burned upland and riparian areas of a first-order watershed, and compared this to five unburned sites examined from ...

Influences of Environment and Disturbance on Forest Patterns in Coastal Oregon Watersheds

Modern ecology often emphasizes the distinction between traditional theories of stable, environmentally structured communities and a new paradigm of disturbancedriven, nonequilibrium dynamics. However, multiple hypotheses for observed vegetation patterns have seldom been explicitly tested. We used multivariate statistics and variation partitioning methods to assess the relative influences of en...

Hydrologic exchange and N uptake by riparian vegetation in an arid-land stream

Riparian zones can strongly influence the exchange of nutrients between streams and their watersheds. Most riparian studies have been done in mesic watersheds, which differ significantly from arid-land watersheds hydrologically. The goals of our work were to determine the strength and direction of hydrologic linkages between stream and riparian zone, and to estimate the extent of uptake of stre...

Influences of Riparian Vegetation on Aquatic Ecosystems with Particular Reference to Salmonid Fishes

--The riparian zone has important influences on the total stream ecosystem including the habitat of salmonids. Shade and organic detritus from the riparian zone control the food base of the stream and large .Toody debris influences channel morphology. Temporal and spatial changes in the riparian zone, the indirect influences of riparian vegetation on salmonids, and the effects of man's activiti...

Groundwater discharge creates hotspots of riparian plant species richness in a boreal forest stream network.

Riparian vegetation research has traditionally focused on channel-related processes because riparian areas are situated on the edge of aquatic ecosystems and are therefore greatly affected by the flow regime of streams and rivers. However, due to their low topographic position in the landscape, riparian areas receive significant inputs of water and nutrients from uplands. These inputs may be im...
